Hey everyone, I recently received my admission to the summer LLM at Berkeley. Who else will be joining in May 2011? Do we already have a Facebook group? Cheers!

Hi! I've been admitted too, but I'm still deciding whether to accept or not. Do you think a Summer LLM would have the same prestige as a 1 year LLM? Do you know anybody who as attended a summer LLM and which effects it had on his career?

That's great, congrats! I personally haven't met anyone who did this program. But there are some experiences on here, as well as on facebook, if you look for 'Berkeley LLM Summer' groups.
I have also been wondering about the prestige issue. Then again - I might be wrong but - I don't think future employers care whether you did an LLM in one year or in two consecutive summer terms. In the end you'll be using the title LLM (Berkeley) and not LLM (Berkeley-summer) ;)
Also, this is an accredited program allowing you to sit the bar in NY and Cal, awarded by one of the best faculties in the country. So in my view it shouldn't be considered less prestigious than the 'traditional' one year program.
Having said that, I do have an 'issue', namely that I have only one week to decide whether I'd like to accept my offer and pay the non refundable deposit. This gives me very little time to see if I can get scholarships/loans etc to fund the program. I could of course decline the offer and hope to get admitted for the one year LLM in March/April. That would give me some more time to find scholarships but it would be risky.
In anycase good luck on your offer and hopefully I'll see you next summer :)

Hi! I have been admitted too! I am very happy for that! I am not concerned about the prestige of the summer LL.M. I am completely sure this summer LL.M. is much better than almost all the "Academic Year" LL.M. Programs around the World. But I am concertn about how to fund the program... Anyway, hope to see you this Summer : )

Indeed, the funding part is my biggest concern as well. Are you applying for the scholarship?

I applied both for the yearly and summer llm.
I have been accepted for the latter but decided to wait for other offers. The reasons are: 1) too short time to truly improve Englsh and broaden my culture... 2) the required tuition fee is the same...almost 50k....
I understand that it is very attractive for mature professionals like me...but I prefer to wait offers from Berkeley and other shools in March - April...
