Berkeley or UT at Austin?

Any opinions?

I guess the most important factor is that it may cost twice as much to live in Berkeley.

Do you guys think it is worth it?

Both are excellent but Berkeley has the edge for its reputation (especially outside the US). UT has great job placement for JD students but you're going there for an LLM. If your focus is anything connected with Latin America, UT is really strong in that area. If your plan is academia, Leiter rates UT very highly too. Both would be great but, all things being equal, I would go for Berkeley.

UT and Stanford are the only 2 options I am still considering at this point. UT is one of the absolute best values of all the highly ranked schools. While I think their LLM program has lagged the past few years, they seem very serious about improving it.

I agree with GrumpyJD that the program may not be as well known outside the US though. For me it will cost about twice as much to go to Stanford than UT. With the decline in my local currency, every dollar really makes a difference and a projected cost of $85,000 for one year at Stanford it is an incredible investment for me.

For me Stanford would be worth it but Berkeley is not as highly ranked as Stanford. So that makes the choice much harder. If I was interested in IP, then easy choice for Berkeley. With anything energy related, then Texas schools are pretty good.

If it was my money and UT vs. Berkeley, I would likely pocket the huge savings and go to UT but ONLY if I was interested in some other area than IP. If IP, then I would definitely got to Berkeley.

For me I like the more independent mindset of Austin as a city whereas San Fran is more of a socialist/marxist/big government mindset politically. So that would also be a factor in my decision. I like to visit San Fran but all the political overtones of the city bothers me after a while. The high costs of everything is very obvious too even cheap things become expensive there.
