2 year JD vs LLM in US for foreign trained Lawyers

The same question has been asked multiple times here on LLM guide However for the same reason to understand which of these programs helps you get a job in the US and stay in the US for a few years.

Yes, I am aware that A 2 year JD is like double the cost of an LLM but allows you to take the bar exam in any of the states in the US.

Kindly request you guys to add as much information as possible.

If you can afford to do a JD Program, it is advisable to a J.D. program rather than doing a LL.M. The chances of getting a job would be more. There are some universities offering a J.D. program. Kansas State University and North Western University are probably the 2 universities,I believe.

Thank you for your reply sincerly :).

I have applied to and got admitted for LLM at emory , university of georgia

and for a 2 year JD at university of arizona , sunny buffalo and university of IOWA

and when I compare the fee for a 1 year LLM at emory or 2 year jd is the same after the scholarships that were awarded

Confused in choosing between them ..

I would choose the 2 year J.D. program over the 1 year LL.M.,if the costs are comparable.

the JD, definitely. if the goal is US law firm employment, the LLM is next to useless.

Even within the JD programs choose the highest-ranking school you can get admission to. With the oversupply of JD grads it won't make much sense to study if your degree won't land you a job anyway. Among the schools with 2-year JDs for international lawyers i'd say Northwestern & USC (both within the top 20) are your best bets for employment in the US.

The chances of getting a job, after LL.M. are extremely poor. If you have a work visa or green card, there are some chances. If you want to work in a law firm, you need to be having a Texas State Bar license.

Please talk to the career services office and get an idea as to what employment opportunities exist. You may get a job as a paralegal, if you are not a licensed lawyer in Texas.
