www.britishcouncil.org seems to contain some information.
I guess it depends very much on where you are from, the site has more details.
No idea how long in could take, but shouldn't be that long.

Thanks for the link, it was very helpful. You are right, it does not appear to take very long to obtain a student visa. In fact, in Los Angeles, where I live, there is a British Consulate office.
