Hi guys I am currently sailing as a chief officer. I have applied n have been accepted for a LLM (maritime law) in a university in wales. Considering my 14 yrs of sailing experience i have been accepted directly for the LLM without having done my LLB. I would really appreciate if you could throw some light on the viability of this course and the job prospects thereafter..thanks a lot

Since you have fourteen years of work experience, you will be in a better position to know the job propects after the LLM than anybody here.

I have been saling for 14 years i have so my expertise lies in operations. Doing this course will be more shore related besides i wanted to know if foregoing LLB n just doing an LLM is a good idea? Think law students will be in a better position to answer this.

Hey marinerkhosla...

Depends what you want to do after the LLM...

If you want to do something law specific, then not having an LLB will inhibit your chances...to qualify as a lawyer, you need a an LLB (or GDL), LPC and a training contract (if you want to become a solicitor). Doing an LLM directly, is not a fast way of becoming a lawyer...all it means is that you wish to submerge yourself in a deeper understanding of the law, in your case, maritime law...

If you think you want to become a lawyer in this area by just doing an LLM, forget about it. If you want to go into another area, non-law related, an reading for LLM will give you an edge in a non-law job market.

Good luck

PS sailing for 14 years...sounds cool

hey thanks a lot for your response.. i wasnt looking at becoming a solicitor but wanted to get into arbitration etc with shipping companies. I guess in that area an LLM should be helpful?
