Planning for my GDL

Big Jim

Hi there

As a graduate with 10 years work experience I have decided to become a Lawyer, so the next stop for me is the GDL. I've got a lot of answers from other posts but I still have a few questions, hope someone can help

1. Can I secure a training contract now (and get help with my fees for GDL+LPC)? Or can I only do that once enrolled in to a GDL course?
2. Is it correct that training contracts are only possible for the solicitor route and not the Bar route?
3. How possible is it to get training contract? Is it more difficult for non-law graduates? Do most students on a GDL/LPC course have or not have a training contract?
4. When should one apply for the TC?

Thanks a lot!!

1. Yes, some firms will offer TCs whihc pay for both GDL and LPC but I have to say, these are few and far between (primarily large, city commercial/corporate firms). Many more offer LPC funding than this and it is perhaps a more realistic route, although, competition is extremely fierce.
2. For the Bar, you must get a pupillage which will then, if successful, lead you to tenancy. TCs are only for solicitors.
3. I believe the figures are 9500 LPC graudates a year, 7500 TC available and therefore there is an overlap. This is by no means as severe as the Bar, where only around 1/3 of BVC graduates will end up with a tenancy. As for graduate preferences, its now become a 50/50 split with a lot of History/Politics/ Science graduates transfering. Ultimately, I think you stand a good chance if you have a 2:1 or above in any traditional subject.
4. TC dates can be found on individual websites. I believe they usually open in Winter time and then close early in the year so they can interview late spring/early summer but this is not the same for every firm and requires much research!
