How many words does a Personal Statement usually have ?
I have one page, roundabout 400 words - is that enough ?
Is there a common amount of words that is recommended ?

Some universities (like KCL for instance) set a limit for the personal statement I dont remember exactly how many words, but mine had about 600 and was at the limit. On the other hand, universities (like UCL) dont set a limit for the personal statement I remember mine had around 1,200 words If youve found a way to say everything you think its worth being said on your personal statement using 400 words, then I wouldnt really worry about it being too small However, if youve left something out cause you thought 400 words was too much, I think you can still stretch it out a bit and add another 200 words at least, depending on the university you want to apply to

yep my LSE statement was twice the allowed length, cause the limit was too stingy. still, they let me in..

Hmm in my personal opinion, the more concise the better. I'd recommend about 1-2 pages, my LSE personal statement was about about a page long and it worked!

And what can you do if you already applied to an University and then realised you wrote a really lousy personal statement and you want to change it? Probably nothing right...?

What university is it? That will probably play a role in your options.

Just include all your strong arguments. Don't worry about the length of your essay. Mine was twice longer than requested but still it worked for me.

Hi, my PS was around 1200 words. I called the schools who set a word limit and asked if I could send it. They all said no problem.

I've sent a bad personal statement to UCL... that's great right? I was so worried I won't apply in time and then I made a crappy application...and the worst thing is since then I've written a truly great personal statement and I have acquired a recommendation from my former job....well what can you do.. .

Amber: I think your situation justifies sending these docs in, especially the rec letter. What do you have to lose?
