Hey all ya lovely people,
Im a 25 yr old guy from India and I have applied to a few law schools in the U.K. for an LLM.
I have recieved unconditional offers from QMUL, Nottingham Uni and Manchester and im awaiting a couple more.
Now a lot of people have advised me to grab the QMUL while some say Nottingham is a bigger brand in comparision, since most of the sites which show Law Rankings(mostly Undergrad courses) have shown Nottingham to be a tad better than QMUL.
Now I know a UCL,LSE,Oxford and the big guns obviously are first choices for most students but what happens when ur stuck with in betweens like QMUL,Nottingham,Birmingham etc etc,...
If any LLM grad who has already concluded his course and is job hunting or already secured a job, could educate me on job prospects post LLM or / if anyone can substancially deduce or reason out which Uni is better, Id be grateful..cheers

Do you mean NLS or University of Nottingham? There is often confussion between the two in these posts. The School of Law is a University of Nottingham School and NLS is part of Nottingham Trent. Look at the RAE results and make up your own mind about which is likely to be the best for your LLM/ CV if you decide on a Nottingham programme.

No.i Meant University of Nottingham which is infact known as NLS. Nottingham Trent on the other hand is know as NTU ( Nottingham Trent University)
Nottingham University is ranked higher in RAE but rankings are for Undergrads and not for LLM

I'm afraid both points are simply not true. Nottingham Law School (NLS) is part of Nottingham Trent University (NTU). The University of Nottingham's School of Law is NOT NLS.
The RAE relates to research (Research Assessment Excercise) and is the means by which the research environment of a School/University is judged and rewarded by the UK government. This clearly has much more impact in Postgraduate than Undergraduate studies since most LLM programmes evolve as a result of an individual academics research interests, rather than (as in law at least) the UG curriculum which is influenced in no small part by the needs of the Law Society of England and Wales.

yes, Im sorry. I was a lil confused but yes you are right, NLS = Nottingham Law school at NTU.
I was contemplating between School of Law, Nottingham University and QMUL.
The latest RAE 2008 undoubtly rates UoN higher than QMUL. Do Firms too take the same stand and views Postgrads from UoN higher than QMUL ?

If you're actually talking about University of Nottingham (and not Trent), I'd say go to Nottingham. In my opinion, it's without a doubt a much higher brand than QMUL...

Firms tend to not care too much where you get the LLM from as long as you go to a decent law school. What is most important is the experience you get doing the programme. Go to the university that offers the modules that interest you most. Then look at who is teaching - do they have an international reputation? What is the average class size? Can you get accommodation? What do you want from the location? London - exciting but expensive, Nottingham - much cheaper but not London!
