I have been denied eligibility by NY Bar Exam Board to sit in NY Bar exam unless I complete additional 20-hours credit programme in ABA approved law school. I have 3-years law degree from Indian University and NY Bar Exam Board office says that while I do meet the durational requirement, Law degree from India does not qualify for substantiveness. Can u please guide me on this with your experience and how to overcome their objection that the Indian law degree does meet their requirement to sit in Bar exam. I intend to take NY Bar in July 2008 subject to getting eligibility confirmation. I need your inputs on this.

Thanks

For the moment ypu dont have a chance, sorry to say this, but 20 credits is like a year attending at a law school, so youmujst reschedule to at least july 2009, and that is if you have been accepted already to a LLM program at a ABA approved law school, I think that you can beat some deadlines, if not you will have to apply around october to start the program at summer 2009 and then sit on the bar on 2010...

I have studied law almost for 5 years in the republic of georgia where I sat bar exam as well and qualified which is of course not common law jurisdiction. After that I did my LLM in London full-time. Now I am doing my GDL or CPE in another words part-time (2 years). I am interested to qualify in NY or California and would like to know whether I will be eligible to sit either NY or California bar exam upon completion of my GDL? And if not what do I have to do in order to be eligible? Will taking another 2 modules and obtaining LLB help? Do I have to do LPC? I do also have work experience in a law firm in the UK. Can anybody advise.

Hi Nataliek

did u find the answer to your question? Is GDL + extra module for LLB enough to sit the NY or Cali Bar Exam?

thanks

As an FYI, the bar exams in New York and California are well-known in the US as being the most difficult bar exams in the States. Those two states have a lot of job opportunities as well, but there are many more states with significant career opportunities that may have less stringent requirements. Good luck!
