MSc is master of science and the LLM is master of laws and seem to refer to taught courses rather than masters by research (usually referred to a MPhil). I would suggest that as far as a degree in law (or law related subject) is concerned, some institutions will not give an LLM to a student who does not have an undergraduate degree in law and use the MA or MSc instead for the award of a masters degree in the field instead. As a corollary, it may be that a student in this situation has a more restricted choice of options, though again this will depend on the institution.
