LLM IP in London (Queen Mary) or Edinburgh ?

Julia01

Hi,

I´m having a hard time in deciding between the llm-programms in intellectual property law (llm innovation, technology and the law in Edinburgh) offered by Queen Mary/London and the University of Edinburgh.

Any experiences, thoughts, opinions about the offered programmes and the citys would be a great help...
I don´t know Edinburgh yet, how is the living, the city, etc?

Thanks a lot !!!

Come to The University Of Edinburgh!

The LL.M programme you have been given an offer for is fantastic. Of course, I would say that, because I work with the team on the distance learning version of the same programme.

You must know a lot about the programme at Edinburgh already, otherwise you would not have selected it, so which particular points are you struggling to make a decision over? I'll start off with a few:

The programme tutors are extremely well regarded throughout academic, government, ngo and commercial sectors. The courses are up-to-date, and internationally relevant. The programme is largely assessed by essays. There is a strong calendar of events at the AHRC Research Centre and the School of Law, and LL.M students are invited to attend.

The School of Law is right in the centre of town, with all the great benefits that brings, like close proximity to shops, pubs and restaurants, Scottish Parliament, National Museums and Library...

Edinburgh itself is a fantastic city. It has something for most styles of living, apart from if you like being surrounded at close quarters by over 7 million people. I'm happy that London holds that distinct privilege, as Edinburgh seems a much smaller place with only around half a million people ;-).

Edinburgh has a great night life, it attracts excellent djs, bands and other musical and theatrical performers; it has great cultural, historic and arts centres; this summer has been pretty warm so the parks and gardens have been popular for chilling out in the sun!

Within twenty minutes you can be in fabulous countryside of the Scottish lowlands, and within an hour or two you can be in the Highlands, such as Loch Ness, Loch Lomond and if you feel brave, the UK's highest mountain - Ben Nevis.

Edinburgh has a large programme of festivals, the most famous of which are at New Year, and in the summer we have the Festival Fringe and International Festival.

If you have opportunity to come over to this great city and have a look in the next week or two, you'll have plenty to keep you entertained.

I really hope to see you in Edinburgh in September. Remember to pop your head round the door and say "hi" when you pass!

The programmes are rather different. The QM one gives you a much specialised range of subjects, while the one in Edinburgh has a wider range of subjects, where you can choose things like Media Law, Medical Law, IT Law and International Institutions as compliments to the IP.

Edinburgh is a lovely city, and much, much safer at the moment, so I would recommend Edinburgh.

Hi,

thanks a lot for your opinions, I´m still deciding... .but this seem to be some really good arguments for Edinburgh :-)
I don´t know the city of Edinburgh yet, therefore your answers are really helpfull...I know that the programmes are quite different, both have their pros and cons...I guess I will have to think about it some more days...

Hey, I graduated in my LLB from QM this year. A friend of mine did IP law at batchelors level there and she seemed to really enjoy it.

East london is no Edinburgh though, not the nicest of surroundings at all, HOWEVER, the teaching and facilities at QM are pretty much second to none.
But first and foremost look at the programmes and go for what appeals to you more than the actual fun you can have in the location, after all, we're doing a masters now, there's no time for that ;)

Julia,

Have you made your decision? Hope to see you in Edinburgh this year.

Imran, sorry I don't know about Essex to give you a fair comparison, but I hope that you choose to come to Scotland!

I studied at Essex and can honestly say that the standard of teaching is very good. The reputation is not that great and the surrounding area is not exactly fantastic, but certainly no worse than Strathclyde. Essex is also a good choice for overseas students.
