LLM in Maritime Law

LLMTiang

Hi guys

I have an offer for an LLM in Maritime Law from both Southampton and Nottingham. I am a bit confused at the moment on what to do as I have friends who are doing the Masters in Southampton and they told me that two of the big professors have left Southampton (Gaskell and Debattista-it must be true as they are not on the School's website) and that the courses are taught by young lecturers. Also I am not sure about Nottingham as I have been told me that there is no real teaching team there and it in only one Professor teaching the core maritime modules.

Any thoughts? Please help me as I have to make a decision.

Hi Tiang

I was in a similar position to yourself recently, although my choice was between Southampton and Swansea.

I chose to accept the offer I received from Swansea rather than Southampton as Professor Gaskell and Debattista only hold honorary seats there now.

If you haven't done so already it maybe worth while having a look at the LLM in Maritime Law that Swansea offer.

Kind regards

Mark

Hi Tiang
I understand your position as it is a very hard decision to choose the right programme. I took the right one when I decided to go to Swansea (I am surprised that you have not applied for that LLM as you seem to be very well informed about the other LLMs in maritime law). The teaching staff at Swansea Law School are excellent and they bring academia and practice together (some of them have worked in practice before becoming academics). I also saw on the School's website that the team is strengthened with the addition of a new professor, one of the top in commercial/maritime law, and two new lecturers. Everybody in the teaching team is very friendly and down on earth. The Library is very good both in terms of books and electronic recources. The city is also very nice as it is built by the sea. After completing my LLM, I got a job at a P&I club, as Swansea's reputation in the industry is immense.
