LLM in Human Rights Law in Essex or Nottingham?

floh

Hi,

I know, my post doesn`t deal with a new topic (I have read the posts about Essex and Nottingham in the discussion board), but perhaps there are any new ideas, advices or comments concerning my question: I got an unconditional offer for the LLM in Human Rights Law of the Universities of Essex and Nottingham for 2007/2008 (I applied only for these ones, not for LSE, UCL, KC or other universities). I am currently working in Colombia for two Human Rights NGOs and would like to continue working in the Human Rights sector after the LLM and my doctoral thesis. Any advices which university or programme is "better", concerning professores, courses and prestige, and would fit my interests better? Essex for example is well known in Colombia. What`s your opinion? Nottingham seems to be very good for students interested in internationla criminal law, armed conflict and humanitarian law, Essex seems to be more adequate for a general LLM in Human Rights Law. By the way, what are the chances to get a scholarship for these LLM programmes in the UK?
Thanks for any advice.

If your interest is in freedom of speech/press you might consider the new LLM program in Media Law at City University Law School.

Hi Floh,
my name is Monica and I am an Italian student. Since I was accepted both in Nottingham and Essex for a LLM in International Human Rights Law (conditional offer...), I'm dealing with your same dilemma. Actually Nottingham seems to be more focused on some specific areas (humanitarian law, human rights field operations, etc), while Essex runs a more general program.... this was my impression, at least. As I would like to work in the Latin American region, both in NGO and intern. organizations, I would have Essex as my first choice, I think it would let me develop my own interest in a better way....
In which organizations are you working at the moment? I have been offered an internship by an Argentine NGO, the CELS, but I've decided to postpone this after the conclusion of the LLM (otherwise.... it would be hard to return to classroom....) Anyway I have spent some time volunteering for a "defensoria del pueblo" en La Boca, Buenos Aires.....

I hope to hear from you soon....

Hugs, Moni
