LLM After a PhD?

Zealous

Hello all,

I will finish my PhD (in law and I hold an LLB) in a couple of years and am interested in studying an LLM in the UK afterwards - for the experience of studying overseas as well as furthering my knowledge.

What I'm interested to know is if holding a PhD would help or hinder an application. I'm guessing it would help insofar as demonstrating academic potential, but I can't find anything on various Uni websites relating to this topic. On King's website I only notice that studying an equal or lower qualification might affect your tuition fees due to them not receiving public funding for it.

Has anyone with a PhD gone back to do a Masters?

I cannot see how it could possibly hurt your chances. Why do you think it would?

Thanks for the reply. It was only based on the concern that the LLM is a step 'backward' and if it would be seen as strange to not take the traditional path of LLB > LLM > PhD. Or if preference would be given to those with no further qualifications.

You need not to be worried on that issue. As I also hold a PhD in law but I would like to further broaden my horizon, especially the international perspective, I have decided to apply for many LLMs in the UK last. Many universities will not consider your doctoral degree and they will evaluate your chance upon the bachelor degree solely.

For the fees, you will pay as others.

Cheers!

That's great information, thank you Maew! And good luck with your applications.
