LLB GRADUATE FROM SOUTH AFRICA CAN I PRACTICE IN IRELAND AS BARRISTER

I attained my LLB Degree from UNISA (distance learning school) in South Africa and I am thinking of emigrating to Ireland.

What is the value of my LLB Degree in Ireland? Will I be able to practice as an attorney/barrister in Ireland with my LLB Degree I attained in South Africa?

Or would the degree have to be converted into an LLB Degree of Ireland and how would it need to be done?

I have another question too, if I want to do my LLM at an Irish Law School would my South African LLB Degree be sufficient for registration?

Hi,

I am also South African, but going to do my LLM in Dublin in Sept, so I have done a little reading.

Re LLM - yes your LLB would be sufficient.

RE practice - firstly the equivalent of an attorney is a solicitor. (Barrister is equivalent of advocate). This is the link to the relevant page on the law society of Ireland's website - https://www.lawsociety.ie/Public/Foreign-Lawyers/

Not sure if you have to have been admitted in SA first - I imagine you should contact the law society to find out exactly.

If you are interested in becoming an advocate / barrister - here is the link to bar counsel - http://www.lawlibrary.ie/viewdoc.asp?fn=/documents/barristers_profession/qualifyingasab.asp&m=3

Again, I think you would have to contact them re specific requirements.
