King's x UCL

Dear applicants,

I am pursuing an LLM in International Commercial Law and I am not sure about UCL reputation outside UK. I am a Brazilian lawyer and know some alumni from King's who are very well in their career (i.e., became partners at Brazilian top firms), but I don't know anyone from UCL. I know that UCL is a top law school, but I am not sure if it has a better reputation when compared to King's. Any views on that?

Any comments are welcome.

Many thanks,

I think it depends really. If you plan on going home to practice and if - as you say - KCL has a strong alumni network in your own country while UCL does not, then I say go for KCL.

At the end of the day, a school's prestige is only as good as its audience. Both are reputable schools, its more which school your target audience will value better.

Thank you both for the prompt reply. I really appreciate your points. I will apply to UCL as well and decide based on the offers (if any...).

I'm also from Brazil and I'm doing my LLM at UCL. I was accepted at KCL as well, but decided in favour of UCL in the end. I asked around before making a final decision and was oriented by people working at top international firms (such as A&O and White & Case) to go to UCL. KCL is a great school and you're right that it's much easier to find people from King's in Brazil, but I reckon UCL is perceived (in general terms) as a better school in the UK and abroad as well. At least that's the feeling that I have after being here in the UK for almost six months. But you also have to take account of what you want to study. KCL offer certain modules in criminal law and labour law, for instance, that simply aren't on offer at UCL. So if you're into any of those, KCL is undoubtedly the right choice. If you want to focus more on public international law, on the other hand, UCL has a much wider variety for you to choose from.
