KCL LLM requirements

Hi everyone, I received a conditional offer from Kings to do the LLM in Sept 2011. One of the requirements was that I have 64% in my exams at UCL (where I've been studying this year as part of my Erasmus exchange). I've just received my results and only got 62%, so unfortunate! Kings told me to upload my results anyway and that they'll consider my previous transcripts to see whether they would still offer me a place (they said it'll be okay if I had the equivalent of a 1st class or upper-second class in my degree). Is any of you in the same position ? I'd like to know what my chances are... thanks!

By the way, I'm a French graduate, so if any of you is French and is a former LLM student at Kings, that'll be perfect!

Cheers

Normally here is how the grade scale works in the UK

70 and above 1st
60-69 2:1
50-59 2:2
40-49 Third

Upper 2nd is the same as a 2:1. Hope this helps.

Guess I wasn't clear in my question... I wanted advice on the LLM requirements considering that my previous grades are french ones (out of 20). I just did the past year at UCL but otherwise I got my degree in France. I don't exactly know the equivalence between english and french grades. Also, my uni is quite strict compared to others (it's the best for Law in France so they want to keep their reputation intact!) so my grades are lower than what they could be in other universities... and I'm not sure Kings will take that into account.

But thanks for your reply anyway!

i am facing a similar problem, got a conditional for 64% and i am still awaiting my last semester results. Although i have a 63.8% presently.. a lot of ppl have told me that if your percentage is above 60 then its more than enough. So i don think it'll be a big problem. :)

With 63,8% I don't think you should worry!! I went to the LLM Admissions Office to ask them, and the woman seem to say that in general they don't take people with only 62...unless they've had good grades in the previous years. We'll see, she couldn't really give me an answer!

yes they did. Actually the IELTS is more commonly used in the UK, but you can take either test. I took the IELTS and got an 8.5! My English was already quite good but I was surprised to get such a good mark... I would actually recommend taking the IELTS and not the TOEFL because you take it in exam conditions, paper etc. and you have a real oral examination. Everybody says the examiners are strict and don't try to help you but I've had several examples of people saying they were quite helpful and nice. A friend of mine took the TOEFL and despite her good level she didn't get such a good mark. She felt really uneasy talking to a computer! But I guess it's a matter of choice and it depends on what's best for you!

About the requirements, Kings asked for a 7.0 in IELTS (don't remember for the TOEFL but they put it on their website) and UCL asked for 7.5. You could also deduct the level difference from these requirements.

Best of luck to you!!
