Job prospects in UK after LLM

sanaya

I am a final year LLB student and would like to do LLM from Uk, but from what I have heard there are fewer opportunities of getting a job in the UK after completing LLM... so is it true? or things have changed and the chance of getting a job have increased?

Hi there - where did you do your LLB? If it’s in the U.K., I don’t think getting an LLM really adds much unless you do it at a more prestigious University or if you do it in an area where you want to specialise (ie if you’re after Biglaw, then either say you do a Finance LLM that would help). If you can share more background, I can give you a more complete answer

I'm from India and will be getting my degree from Indian university, and I want to do specialization in IPR

Helpful! If you want to do IP law I agree an LLM would help but it should be from a specialist university that is well regarded in that field (ie like LSE etc.). There’s a big demand for Data Privacy lawyers and that is definitely growing, with great fluidity at the associate level both nationally and across the EU (ie especially in Madrid). That said, to become an associate you’ll need to do a TC and then again the competitive for that is tough and they do prefer people that have some flexibility (as you may not get a guaranteed seat in IP or DP).
Not sure if the above is that helpful but ultimately DP is definitely hot stuff and there’s lots of demand for DP specialists. It’s all about how you present yourself in your TC applications (which are super competitive not only with other LLB students, but also GDL kids).
Do you have any firms in mind? We have a Data team in our firm but there’s no guarantee any trainees get a seat there, but we use specialist IP counsel for help so I can certainly put you in touch with a contact (Harbottle Lewis, 2Birds, McDermott, A&O etc. which all have good IP dept)

Thanks a lot for the advice!!!!
I still have to do research on the companies there.. as my plan to do LLM abroad was decided few days ago.
And I would be grateful if you could suggest some companies where they hire trainees and I want to these if I could get internship during my course.
What colleges do you suggest? I was thinking UCL, kings or Queens? Are they good for IPR? And how's University of Edinburgh and University of Manchester?

Hi LuLu100,
I hope you are doing well!
As the time is passing I would find it helpful if you could advise me on which College is better for IPR.
Someone who have studied in UK suggested that university of Glasgow is good for IPR? Is to true?

I have been doing my research but Glasgow is on 73rd position compared to King's college.
So should I prefer king's college first?

Hi there - sorry I don’t get notified on a response... my view is to pick the university with the best reputation irrespective of specialism - I doubt a large law firm’s HR department keeps up to date with specific topic rankings. There are three tiers of universities in the U.K. in my view- I would apply accordingly and then pick the best ranked one (obviously price, scholarship etc. could then weigh in to final decision).
Tier 1: Ox, Cam and LSE (in that order)
Tier 2: UCL, KCL, Edinburgh (in that order)
Tier 3: Bristol, Nottingham, QMUL, Warwick, Durham, Exeter, Manchester, York (rough order)
I personally wouldn’t go to any other university in the U.K. (sorry not to be disrespectful to those institutions) but price/return ratio I don’t think they are worth it.

Do you mean life generally or for your studies/job prospects? In terms of life/studies, we’re in full lockdown so classes should all be online. Now your LLM would start in September and by that time, whilst there could be some disruption, I expect you will be back at full live teaching with perhaps some reduced socials/events
As for job prospects, I think it depends on the practice area. I can tell you the job market for finance and/or restructuring Associates is super hot with a lot of movement and opportunities. HY market is also booming and corporate M&A legal work is at an all time high - our NY team are closing at least two/three SPACs a week. Litigation is very strong due to the downturn sparking contractual disputes. Employment law as well with redundancies and advice etc. I think it’s impossible to tell how the situation will be 1.5 yrs now from

I mean life generally till I graduate, because of pandamic is it difficult to find part time jobs?
And I'll be studying for part-time so can I work or not? I have read somewhere that students studying part-time aren't allowed to work
