Just curious, when you say South Asian students, do you mean you are from Pakistan or Bangladesh?
I ask this becoz most Indians writing on this forum say they are from India and don't normally say they are South Asian students.

True you are. I am a Bangladeshi.
I said so because of the similarities of education system in these countries in south asia, particularly India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. To be precise, I could have said Indian sub-continent.
Thanks

I am not sure many Indians would be thrilled at hearing that modern, westernised, excellent quality education being imparted in the largest Democracy in the world i.e. India is being compared by Ashraf with 'madarassa' type of education of Islamic countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh.
I don't think there is really too much similarity in education system between India and these Islamic countries.
Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS) and Indian Institute of Management(IIMs) are often compared with MIT, Harvard etc and are easily comparable to the very best in the world.
Indian excellent education system is the reason Indian Computer professionals, Doctors, Lawyers and Scientists etc are doing so well abroad and India is the leader in fields like IT, Bio-Technology etc. Even children of people of Indian origin are often topping in schools in UK, USA etc.

I was attending a seminar in USA and an American asked me where I am from to which I said I am originally from India.
When this question was asked to a Pakistani (who was from Lahore), this Pakistani gentleman replied 'I am from South Asia'.
American quizically said 'South Asia'? to which I pointing to the Pakistani replied to the American 'oh, he is from Pakistan' and this Pakistani gentleman started glaring at me :-)
Most people of Indian origin in UK are not happy being clubbed together with Pakistanis and Bangladeshis as 'British Asians' (or people of 'South Asian origin' as reported by some newspapers in UK) and want to be known seperately as 'British Indians'.

I appologise as this may not be of interest for all ppl attending this site.
Well, this is in response to Anita's mail.
As an Indian she might brag about her Largest Democratic country. But isn't it impolite to categorise the total education system in Bangladesh as "Madrash" type? Education teaches us to be modest, not arrogant.
In fact, it is in India, where the "Fundamentalist like BJP, Shivsena" ruled for years, which is not the case of Bangladesh, there is no possibility in Bangladesh in near future. So dont be so enthusiastic abt your so called democracy.
I admit, India has some very good institutions like IIT. but I was not sure IIT is compared with MIT or like. Compared to size and population of India, even I agree with her, the numbers are not very big to brag.
What about your total educaton system? whats your percetange of educated people? Most largest Madrashah like Deoband are in India.
Its true that we dont have very good institutions like IIT. But many of our BUET students are doing very well in different institutions in USA, UK and in Europe. The number may be small compared to India, but again, how many is your population again, Maam?
For your information, our Dr. Younus has got Noble prize in Economics. He is a student of Dhaka University. Do your IIT have one? When you'll get one, please let me know.
Thanks,
Ashraf

Anita and Reeta, it was highly improbable of you to say something like that. FYI the education system in Pakistan, Bangaldesh and India is not much different, When colleges in UK make a decision, they have a set parameter which is pretty much the same for India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. check out the UCAS. While I am proud to be an Indian and very partiotic ( i suppose my name suggests that too), I completely disagree with you. It is quite surprising that inspite of you attending seminars in US, your attitude essentially remains quite unprogressive. Of couse Ashraf has given you a befitting reply. FYI no matter how many degrees you earn or even if you study in the best institution in the world, if your attitude is not changed, it will hardly make a difference in your life.
Bangladesh, Pakistan, Srilanka or India, we are supposed to be helping each other and not snubbing at our neighbours . Anita and Reeta, your comment were higly immature.
Ashraf, as an Indian I apologize for their conduct.

This is absolutely brilliant some good old RACIST INDIANS (and I only say this because of what was said about madrassas and the inferior education of Pakistan and Bangladesh). To correct a few misconceptions, Pakistan has excellent engineering, medicine and business schools, and most of them are internationally recognised, recruiters from Schlumberger, Unilever, Procter and Gamble etc regularly recruit people from our uniz for INTERNATIONAL posts... our Agha Khan Institute of Medical Sciences is world renowned(and if u r not aware of this then go see some facts)... I have no knowledge of Bangali uniz as I am a Pakistani, however I studied with a number of Bangaliz in London and they were not only very smart but adapted brilliantly. Yes we do not have brilliant law schools but im guessing india doesnt have any good law schools as well(hence the highest number of posts by indians on this site who are DYING to get into foreign uniz)... most indians ask me what was the need to seperate INDIA and Pakistan... the next time someone asks me ill direct them to this blog... it is not only shameful but absurd... I hope this is not the attitude in general in India... and its only two narrow minded ladies who i guess are frustrated for some reason or the other... and for ur information the largest democracy... BULLSHIT... the world is not blind v all know what goes on in the largest democracy... u shud hav also added the largest underworld... a DEMOCRACY which is so obviously dominated by HINDUS... as for british indians... plz i didnt meet a single person who said this... and i havent met a pakistani who wud say he is south asian... but the point here is that this website is not for BHARAT MAHAN... its for everyone and most ppl who write here are MATURE and help each other... and well as was rightly said above that even if u can goto harvard but have this pathetic attitude... im sorry ur going nowhere... and yes the topic of this blog... well believe me no one hires u after an LLM because ur an INDIAN... its not a sunny deol movie for God's sake... jobs are given on merit so no matter if u have an INDIAN EDUCATION WHICH IS COMPARABLE TO HARVARD(WHAT A LAUGH!) or a madrassa one... its all bout how good U R AS A PERSON... and next time before saying something about how things are in a country which you dont know jack shit about please be careful...
