I am thinking about doing an LLM, preferably on one of the more prestigious law schools in the UK or Scotland.
I was wondering how much work a one-year full-time LLM actually is, in hours per week, assuming you don't expect top marks. Does it differ between subjects a lot? Between universities? Perhaps people could post how much time they invest in their studies on average per week - it would be great if you could give the time for classes as well as the time you spend learning in private.

In Cambridge you have at least 8 hours class time but some courses have more. On top of that it is recommended that you do 10 hours per subject per class. I must admit that I didn't do that the first term but also that I will have to do that for the second and third terms and probably more to make up what I haven't done so far.

Thanks for the information. How much work is this in total per week then? 18 hours?

So you're not finishing the LLM in one year?

It's at least 48 hours per week. (8 (4 2-hour classes) + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10). The Cambridge academic year is divided into 3 8 week terms. I started in October, will begin my second term in mid-January and will finish in June.

Will you be finished with the LLM then or do you still need to write a dissertation?

"Will finish" as in will finish. My thesis is to be handed in by May 1st. If it had to be handed in after June I wouldn't be finished in June.
