Employability of Graduates after UK LLM

Hi Guys,

I am an advocate from India, practicing in Gujarat High Court...
I am interested in pursuing an LLM course in Intellectual property law or International finance/international law from any of the following universities:-
UCL,
Edinburgh,
KCL,
LSE.

To me, what matter most are the prospects of employability after the completion of LLM program. Could any one give any inputs as regards to the best university from the perspective of employment prospects.
Any other good universities in the Uk or other European Countries for the aforementioned programs?

In my opinion you should be best off in LSE or King's. Certainly not in Edinburgh I think, as it is not very well known.

The best IP centre in the UK is at Queen Mary University, London. After that, institutions such as UCL, KCL, LSE and Nottm offer good options or, if you wanted to do just 2 modules and mix your LL.M up a bit, Cambridge may offer you something. However, unfortunately, they have closed admissions for 09/10.

Edinburgh is, in fact, a very well known and respected institution but, although it has a very good IP research centre (SCRIPT) and some of the leading academics, I'm not sure how much it would help you to get a job in, presumably, London as a lawyer.

I must say, I have only just speed read the post but it is quite useful, considering the amount of people who seem to want to do an LLM and practice in the UK. For those who don't want the experience and academic satisfaction offered by an LL.M, it basically says, IMO, don't do it- not only is it very difficult to get a job in the UK as a lawyer, no matter how experienced you have become at home and, back in home, it is almost useless, and wont help you progress.

On a further note, as a UK student, LLMs wont really help those who want to be solicitors. Firms dont really care all too much about them and see them, often, as a wasted year. The Bar, on the other hand, is a different story...

Bar, Policy formulation and Academia are the fields for practical utilization and employability of LLM. Except for Tax, and IP, commercial world won't appreciate an LLM much.

The opportunities in London are the same if you do the IP LLM in Edinburgh. LLM students don't study Scots law and IP law is normalised throughout Britain so don't discount the quality you could receive from Edinburgh. General IP courses in the UK don't provide nearly as much in-depth study for practice in the area. An LLM in IP is one of the great career boosters for those seeking to practice in the area...along with securing some type of work experience with an IP practice.
Best of luck.

I thank you all for your valuable inputs.....It surely helped me a lot....

Especially the link provided by Jagsmehn provided very important information..the inputs from Edipostgrad and Dimelow also gave valuable information...

Well, I opt for LLM in IP or International finance because of the fact that along with an LL.B. qualification, I do have a qualification of Bachelors in Engineering and I have good knowledge of latest technology subjects including the subjects of computer and IT. If not, IP, I would choose an LLM in International finance, as I find the field to be lucrative.

Thank you all once again for your replies..So, I have come to know that Queen Mary, London, LSE or Edinburgh are all good..Someone suggested the name of cambridge, but possibly i may not be in a position to afford the fees even if I get admitted to the uni.

Can anyone suggest any universities for the subjects relating to International Finance? Any inputs for ILF, Germany for its LLM in financial laws program? Any more information about the prestigious universities for LLM in IP Program?
