Hi,

appreciate your opinion on wheter KCL or BU is better with regards to finance law. I think KCL is more recognized internationaly but BU as the advantage of giving the chance to get the NY bar.

thx

Where do you intend to practice? If in the United States, then BU Law may be better. Their graduate program in banking and financial law administered by the Morin Center is quite good.

I will probably want to practice in the UK or France..
US is a long shot for me but I was thinking that NY bar is a big plus even if I want to practice in UK/EUR.
what do you think?

Thx!

In general, if you want to practice in Europe, a European degree is ideal. If you intend to practice in the UK, a degree from a prestigious British university is helpful. If you are a member of the New York State bar, the UK/French firm may assign you to the New York office. In other words, membership in the New York State bar is an added qualification to an LLM.

CR1, I am no expert in these matters, but I guess you might also want to compare the 2 universities from a global perspective and may be KCL would stand at a higher level from this point of view.

I don't think Boston is in the same league as Harvard, etc.
On the other hand, even though KCL too may pale a bit in comparison to its more reputable cousins, still, it can give them a run for the money.

Rest is all subjective.

well thank you all for your replies,

I am inclined to go for KCL especially that the International Finance LLM I want to pursue seems quite good.

KCL and London are a fine mix. No need to go elsewhere. In Boston, you still need to head for New York, and possibly, London.

The LLM in Financial Law from KCL is a good programme. KCL has the expertise in international finance. Of course, the opportunity for a student to study in one of the world's financial centres is an added incentive.

Take note of the difference on how British and American institutions perceive the global financial meltdown: British institutions tend to look at the crisis from the perspective of the City of London/Europe, while American institutions will view the meltdown from the Wall Street shakedown and their own home mortgage crisis.

CR1, it all depends on what works for you. KCL has the prestige, and at the same time provides a theoretical framework in analysing financial law issues (the approach is more academic which is typical of the British system, relying more on concepts, institutional models and analytical methods). On the other hand, BU has a good law programme which provides a practical and experiential approach to the study of banking and financial law (you will be engaged in the analysis of actual cases, especially the current financial turmoil on Wall Street and across the United States).

The decision to attend a particular school ought to consider what works for the individual concerned, i.e., the effectiveness of the method of instruction to impart knowledge. I would suggest that you further study the KCL and BU (the Morin Center's web site specifically) programmes and determine which method of instruction works for you, before arriving at your definitive choice.

You've applied for LLMs you have no idea of what they cost? xD

US LLMs always cost about 40-45.000$ tuition, and with living costs etc added it can fastly be 55.000$ or more, depending on the city you live in.

King's College and other UK universities ask about 7000£ for their LLMs, and living costs differ. London will be rather expensive.

In the end for Continental Europeans (who have the Euro), the UK will be about 20.000 all-in for a year, whereas US will be more around 45.000.

Boston and New York are two of the most expensive cities in the United States. Taxes in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts are some of the highest. Tuition is expensive (fixed cost) but there are areas with decent and affordable housing. You can plan your budget so that you can lessen your living expenses (variable cost).

London may have lesser tuition fees but housing is very expensive. It will add up to your educational budget, and it will closely approximate costs in Boston (London may be slightly less, but not that much, unless you are an EU student). Try to explore student housing from King's so that you can lessen your costs. Food is expensive in London (same in Boston). Books are more than expensive in London than Boston.

Taking the New York bar exam would increase your budget from at least $5,000 to at most $10,000 (review materials, exam registration and living expenses).
