Could you explain what does below numbers mean please. According to The Times, it is 108th out of 109 right? And 280th out of what? 282 or 1000. What do the numbers 109 and. 282 and 1000 mean?

Could you check this link and explain the difference between aboementioned numbers and those shown in the link.
Is there an improvement or not ?

Thank you in advance.

Do you mean the University of East London?

You have to go to the main table (overall rankings of UK universities) of Times Good University Guide. UEL ranks 108th among the 114 UK universities. 108= indicates that it occupies the same spot as that of another university (Bolton).

The total ranking score in the main table is 1000.
Therefore, "total score out of 1000 (last year): 282 (280)" means that UEL scores 282 out of 1000 this year (2010) and its last-year score is 280 out of 1000.

I hope I am right.

Yes, I meant to ask about the UEL. Sorry, I have forgotten to add the link I am asking for:

http://extras.timesonline.co.uk/tol_gug/gooduniversityguide.php?subject=LAW

Could you check and tell me please whether the UEL is ranked 62th out of 92. If yes then does it not contradict the number 108?

Thank you in advance.

"108" is UEL's overall ranking as a university (among all other UK universities), whereas "62" is a subject (law) ranking. Not every UK university maintains a law school; therefore, only 92 appear in the law league table in which UEL is placed in the 62th slot.

I hope I have made it clear now?

So, it is possible to say that UEL Law school is distinctly better than the overall appearance of the whole university. Isn't it?

Thank you for your contribution in advance.

If I may barge in, I wouldn't conclude that. UEL isn't considered a good university nor is it considered a good law school. It may not be as poorly ranked in law as it is overall, but its position in law is far from being good (62 out of 92). If you allow me to give you some piece of advice, I wouldn't apply to any university out of the top 15 (or maybe top 10 to be a little more conservative).
