I intend to apply to law schools in the UK as well as the US. Being from India, i will have to take an English proficiency test. Oxford has included TOEFL test as part of its English requirements in the brochure for 2008-09 without any caveat. I am not so sure about Cambridge. Is it okay to take TOEFL for Oxford, Cambridge and LSE as none of the US schools accept IELTS and i'd rather be better prepared for one test than giving both?

Cambridge accepts the TOEFL only if in your country you can't take the IELTS

i red that if part of your education has been taken in english you don't need the IELTS... but I don't know the details, so maybe you write them an e-mail asking for specific informations

As per my understanding, everyone from India needs to take IELTS/TOEFL, whichever may be applicable to the particular school notwithstanding a convent or English-medium education.

Since i am applying to both the UK and US schools, i'd rather hoped that i'll only have to give either TOEFL or IELTS. But it seems that one cannot be substituted for the other. :(
Also can anyone please tell me what is the latest date by which one can take TOEFL and IELTS in order to get the scores in time to meet the application deadlines of Oxford, Cambridge and LSE?

It depends on the place where you'll have the exam... for example, in Rome the british council organize one or two tests per month... You have to consider the date of the test and add more or less two weeks for the results.
But you can also send your application without the language test results and send them later.
