Resume/ CV

Most colleges ask for a CV. Is there a specific format to follow while drafting one? How many pages should an ideal CV have? Some colleges do not specify a page or word limit for their CVs. Also, what should the CV contain? Work experience, or academic achievements, or both and in how much details should these be described?
