LLM International Law

Bolivia!

Hi guys,

I'm German but will be finishing my LLB (Hons) Law with Politics degree at the University of Manchester (UK) next year. I am currently looking into LLM programmes in international law.

Any recommendations?

Apart from the London Unis (Kings, UCL, LSE) and Edinburgh my focus has been on the Graduate Institute in Geneva. Any other recommendations? Which one out of the ones I named would you choose and why?

Hi there. All I can say is definitely do not go to IHEID. I have made the mistake of attending this school in the international law program and it is by far the worst school I have ever been to for many reasons. Just to name a few the classes are not good, the second year courses available are merely a repetition of the first year courses so students end up having to take courses they are not even slightly interested in just to obtain enough credits, and the administration is horrible. The so-called academic advisor has not once responded to student emails asking academic questions. Also be careful because the program at IHEID is not a LLM it is a Masters of Arts. As a qualified lawyer it has been a disappointing experience for me.

Definitely Cambridge: any time anywhere! Look at those grand masters like Fitzmaurice, McNair, Bowett, Higgins, Jennings, Lauterpacht and most importantly Opponheim. They have two things in common: being a legend in this area and being affiliated with Cambridge University (Whewell Professorship).

Moreover, you will be taught by Professor Crawford and attend great lectures at the Lauterpacht Centre.

In brief, there is an unbeatable international law tradition in Cambridge.
