LLM Application - Summer School

rf1989

Hi everyone,

I am a trainee lawyer in Geneva, Switzerand, and I plan to postulate to LLM programs next year. I think I will select NYU and CLS among my choices.

Overall, I've had good grades along my academic track. I graduated with the equivalent of a 3.4 GPA for my Bachelor's degree and with a 3.9 GPA for my Master's degree. I've also graduated from another postgraduate program with the equivalent of a 3.7 GPA.

I followed in summer 2012 a summer school in Geneva called "Duke-Geneva Institute in Transnational Law". As its name indicates, this is a joint program between the University of Geneva and the Duke Law School. The courses lasted a month and were taught in English. By the end of this program, exams took place and I got a rather low GPA of 3.34.

Because of the results I got, I am thinking about not mentioning that I took part to this summer school in my future applications. I am afraid these results might weaken my application. Do you think the results I got would weaken my application? Or do you think it is still an experience which is worth mentioning, knowing the fact that I took part to interesting lectures and met students from all over the world, even if the GPA I got is rather low?

I really thank you in advance for your help and merry christmas by the way!

I would think that the grades you got in summer school won't matter that much. Why not just not mention them in you application?

I thank you very much for your reply.

I thought about not mentioning the grades, and just mention that I took part to the summer school. In this case I think I would have to produce an attestation which states that I participated to the summer school (as proof), which is already in my possession, but I am not sure that NYU or CLS would accept it if it doesn't come directly from Duke. Do you think they would accept such an attestation if it comes directly from me? Or would they require that I ask Duke to send it? If I ask Duke to send the attestation to the LSAC I'm afraid they would join the grades with, and I don't know if it is worth the risk.
