IP LAW LLM- UCL- LSE- KINGS- MIPLC- QMUL- EDINBURGH

Hello everyone,

I would really appreciate your views about the better option of the above for an IP law LLM. I have listed my concerns and opinions below as far as I could observe but I would appreciate any inputs. I aim to continue with a Phd and become an academic in this area but I might consider working at an IP firm in the meantime. For my Phd I plan to apply to the USA, UK and Europe but I would prefer the USA more along them.

I consider that UCL and LSE are better universities in law in general and have better prestige but UCL has fewer options for IP courses and LSE’s options include both IP and IT areas but they lack a bit on the IP core courses as far as I could see (such as no trademark module opened in the last few years as I have observed)

I know that QMUL, Edinburgh and Kings have good reputations for IP. They offer a variety of courses and courses are well suited for an IP law LLM.

I know that MIPLC is a great option too but it being a center and not a university raises some questions as to enjoying my last year as a student.

I would really appreciate your inputs considering I aim to continue with a Phd in this area but might also work in a IP law firm after the LLM before applying to a Phd.

Thank you so much!

Hey!

I think the best alternative for you is to check the modules offered by each of the universities. QMUL is a prestigious institution when it comes to LLM in IP and KCL is more prestigious in general.

I am divided between QMUL and KCL too, but for what I could observe and talk with students from both institutions, KCL and QMUL will suit us well. However, from an academic perspective, maybe KCL is a better option (for what I've been told QMUL has a more practical approach).

Wish you luck :) and a tip is to search on LinkedIn for alumni and talk to them about your plans.

[By the way, if anyone else is reading this we would appreciate inputs!]

Hi

I see that you have mentioned that you are open to studying in US. I would say that you can look at UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law as an option. It is a powerhouse in IP and has courses in tech as well. I am currently pursuing my LLM in Commerce and Technology from Franklin Pierce giving me an exposure of IP, IT and finance (commerce). That is a unique intersection which not many law schools are providing and is a really upcoming field.

I hope this helps.

Fortunately, there are many career opportunities for a legal professional who has an LL.M. in Intellectual Property Law.
