I'm guessing your law school is in Manhattan? (NYU, Columbia, Fordham) If so, living there can be tricky and somewhat expensive - although further up on the upper West Side and Harlem you can find some deals. Think about close-in Brooklyn (Williamsburg, Park Slope) or even Queens (Long Island City). Train service into Manhattan is quick from these neighborhoods and they are safe. There can be rougher hoods further out so make sure you ask people that live there what they think.

Craigslist is the go-to place to find flatshares, subleases, etc. And sometimes your school might have a service that connects you to other people looking to rent or those who already have flats but need roommates.

Hope that helps!
