I am totally up for it:) if I correctly understood, last year MIDS created a facebook group itself. Just in case here is my facebook page https://www.facebook.com/trakhalina?ref=bookmarks

Congrats! Reputation wise, from what I have gathered so far, ICAL has a stronger reputation in the field of international commercial arbitration. Led by vice chairperson of SCC, ICAL is very well regarded in the community of international commercial arbitration. All the arbitration lawyers I have asked recommended ICAL over MIDS.

It seems MIDS has a better reputation in continental Europe, especially in Swissland, France, Germany and Austria. But outside Europe, not that many people have heard of it (especially East Aisa I would say, coz I am from there haha). If you want to find a job in these countries, MIDS might be a better choice.

Course wise, MIDS covers courses other than commercial arbitration, like WTO, investment arbitration. If you are interested in public international law definitely go to MIDS. Naturally, it offers more job opportunities in those areas. But if you have determined to pursue your career in commercial arbitration like I have, ICAL might be a better choice.

I am not sure if cost is a concern to you, but MIDS is a lot more expensive than ICAL, even with scholarship.

In the end, like one of the MIDS candidates shared with me, it is all about your end point: what kind of job you want to do afterward, where do you want to work. I guess there is no right or wrong answer here, only the choice that suits your end point.

Happy to discuss more and would love to hear your thoughts. (I saw your message to me, but I think it might benefit more people if we just discuss here :))

I regret applying to ICAL. Missed the deadline. Though application is still open till 14 April. Any idea if they entertain application for Int. students ? they have not expressly said not advised to apply by 20 Jan.

Further any views on Sciences Pro Paris ?
I am in the waiting list of MIDS and now planning to apply to other good arb courses which i missed earlier

Absolutely! Let's talk here so that everybody can share its opinion.
I completely agree with all you have said.
The only "problem" that I see with ICAL is that the MIDS seems to have a better reputation within law firms arround Europe. In their broachure they quote the top-ranked law firms which hire people from the MIDS. Also, there are some forums and meetings to network with such firms. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think one can be more confident on his possibilities to enter a great law firm in Paris or London with a MIDS LLM that with an ICAL LLM.

This is my only concern with the programme though!

I have to say, in term of presenting the programs to prospective candidates, MIDS did a better job. They even have annual reports and brochures recording graduates' employment status. When I was researching these two programs by myself, It did give me an impression that it has a better reputation. That was the reason for my struggle in the first place. But after talking to some arbitration practitioners, my concern was relieved. I guess ICAL needs to work on its presentation in its website hahah.

Hahaha absolutely! So those practitioners you talked to think that when applying for a job, both will have a similar recongnition, isn't it?

And in addition the ICAL programme seems to be more practise-oriented.

Thank you for sharing it!

They recognized that both programs are well-regarded programs, but all recommended ICAL knowning that my intention to practice commericial arbitration afterwards. I quote one of the senior lawyers words for your reference. "Hard choice for you, but on balance I think that Stockholm has the best reputation and good connections for jobs for their LLM graduates."

Hope that helps.

Hi guys!

Hope you are doing well and enjoying these stress free days since admissions were released. I wanted to mentioned that I know attorneys that went both to Stockholm and to the MIDS. All of them speak really highly of their respective programs; however, it is worth noticing that while all of the people that attended the MIDS find really good jobs at renown law firms, the people from Stockholm did not find positions after their LL.M. I do not know what’s reason behind this (maybe the people from Stockholm did not search hard enough, or did not networked enough) but I just wanted to let you know.

Warm regards,

When deciding between MIDS and ICAL, the decisive factors were 1) besides MIDS' reputation I think they have a very strong alumni network 2) it is a program under the auspices of the graduate instiute for development studies, and that is a line I would follow, especially in the area of investment law and energy 3) it concentrates more on the French arbitration thought than the English one, and my second foreign language is French, although MIDS should include classes dedicated to the English Arbitration Act. 4) I would definitely try to continue and do a phD at Geneva University 5) I personally don't feel like doing a LLM exclusively in commercial arbitration,I dont think its worth putting all my eggs in one basket, and MIDS offers a good combination of both commercial and investment arbitration. 6) I am from south Eastern Europe, so a strong LLM in arbitration from switzerland is much appreciated.
hope these thoughts contribute a bit to the debate, although the best advice in this case would be to think and see where you see yourself in 3-5 years.

I am waiting for the scholarship also, so best of luck to us all!
