I am a former student of this programme. I can tell you that it is very good. The teachers are excellent, but you must be completely fluent in French and English (specially French). The programme organizes workshops with sponsors in order to facilitate students to get an internship. Sometimes is difficult to get an internship, specially for students coming from outside Europe (Latin America, Africa or Asia), but at the end 100 % of students get it. The eventual problem is that the programe is too focused on Swiss law (I was an international student). Rgrds,
MBL

Thanks for the information. I just got admitted to the 2007/9 program and it's very useful to know this things beforehand. Do you know if any of the MBL students carried out their internship outside Switzerland?

Yes, some students had the opportunity to perform their internships outside Switzerland / 4 or 5 students did it in that way. But for this you must have the authorization from the Committee of the MBL. The MBL is extremely demanding but at the same time is an excellent life experience.

Hi !! i coursed the MBL two years ago and in that time 80 % of the courses were in French and the rest 20 % was in English. Consequently, it was extremely necessary to have a good level in French.
Currently, the MBL Committee is giving more importance to the English language and there are more modules in English. But French is still the main language of the programme. The courses in English are very very very good. And if you are native English speaker you will make a difference during the course. In my case, I prepared my thesis in English / I feel more confortable writing in English.
Anyway, the programme is excellent and the possibilities of having an intership are high. I strongly recommend this programme to you.
Kind regards,
Paul Harrison

Hi Paul,
Its very kind of you to have taken time out to reply. I do really appreciate it.
I am not very sure if I could handle a course which is 80% French when my French is not very good. I have been trying to call up one of the university tutors to gain further information but the director is presently out of Geneva. I want to ask if there is a possibility of doing this course with majority of the modules in English. Anyway I shall try speaking to them again tomorrow.
I was wondering if you could answer some more questions
1) How much did this course totally cost?
2) Is it easy to find permanent employment in Switzerland after you finish?
3) Does this course automatically make you a member of the Swiss Bar - I mean is this course like the LPC in the UK, where the rights to join the British bar is automatically achieved by the end of the course?
4) How many modules do you need to study and how many exams do you need to sit for?
5) How did you find life in Geneva? Are the locals friendly?
Thanking you again for your help
Pavi

Hi Paul,
Hi Pavi,
I think that you must have a good level of FRench. Absolutely. What you can do is to arrive 2 or 3 months before the start of the programme and make a special course of French at the University of Geneva. Some students of the MBL make this language programma to improve their level. I heard that this language programme is extremely useful.
1) The tuition is 7000 CHF per year (2 years) and you will need around 1500 CHF for living and expenses. It is not expensive. In addition you may apply to the several scholarships that the programme provides (I apply to one scholarship and I did not pay the tuition fees !!!). Gva is very expensive to live (it is one of the most expensive cities in the world, jointly with London, Tokio ...)
2) It is not easy to obtain a permanent job in Gva. But for people coming from Europe is easier and 100 % of my colleagues got an internship and afterwards a permanent employment. It is a matter of insistence.
3) No. If you want to be a member of the GVa bar, you must do a special exam.
4) You have to participate in all modules of the programme. You cannot make a choice.
5) Life in Gva is very interesting. It is a nice city, very calm, well -organized. I really enjoyed my Gva experience. it was great. The weather is not too bad ( a bit cold during january to march; the summer is excellent !!!!!! The best time). Locals are very friendly but sometimes are shy. But it is ok.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Paul Harrison

Thanks a lot for all the information you provided to us Paul. Sorry about the late reply. I have studied in Geneva before and evisaged participating to the MBL this year. However, I had to defer my enrollment for next year due to some personal reasons.
You mentioned that everyone who participated in the program was succesfull in getting an internship for the 2nd year and then everybody got a job in Switzerland. This is good news.
From a practical point of view, I'd be interested to know who do you obtain the internship for the 2nd year. What kind of support does the university offer? Do you have to send resumes all over and hope to get an internship or does the university have special arrangements with certain employers ? Is it possible to do the internship in a law office ?
Thanks in advance,
Cata.
