LLM in Leiden

aichka

I already have a BA from NYU and an MA in International relations from a UK University of Kent at Canterburry and have been accepted to do an LLM in Public International Law at Leiden. I have also been accepted to regular J.D. programs in the US. While trying to decide between the two I am trying to understand whether the Leiden LLM would allow me to take the Bar Exam in the US and get proper accreditation here in case I want to practice in the States.
Any help/advice on this would be much appreciated
Thanks

are you planning to take the NY bar?

better to check their website for the requirements. but from what i've heard, it's only a minority of LLM programs (and mostly american programs) which they count that as proper accreditation.

i think it's different from state to state... regular JD programs sound more applicable if you do want to practice eventually.

The bar in NY requires that you at least have a minimum number of grad level courses in US law. Most LLM programs in the Netherlands cooperate with a US university to provide this (Amsterdam and Columbia for example).
However, although there are possibilities here, this route is not one well traveled and arranging all the necessary paperwork and such might be difficult. Check with the LLM program of your choice.
In addition, you cannot directly compare a JD with an LLM.
