LL.M. LIPIT (IP-IT) in Göttingen, Germany # Curriculum Overview

I have recently graduated from LIPIT LL.M. in Göttingen University and I would like to share my experience about the program and especially about the offered curriculum and its IP and IT relevance.

I include here some bullet-points, which may help future applicants orientate during their LL.M research. These concern mostly the curriculum opportunities offered and the reasons why I would personally recommend this program:

- Overall, a program with a broad variety of offered courses. Academically, LIPIT covers the majority of IP & IT issues, fundamental ones and new developments on the field with the most recent academic discussions. The level of teaching is most of the times very sufficient with interesting topics, professors and students from all over the world.
- In IP I had the chance to learn about: trademarks/copyrights/trade secrets/patents/designs/software protection and the newest developments on the field (just some examples: Unified Patent Court, DSM Directive on Copyright, AI generated works etc.). There are IP courses in which you can also learn some IP licensing aspects and contract drafting.
- In IT I had the chance to learn about: privacy, data protection, e-commerce, cybersecurity, AI, platform regulation, computer programs protection, but also other aspects, such as IT licensing and contracts and more. This includes the latest pieces of legislation in EU as well (just some examples: DMA, DSA, AI Act, etc.)
- I would say that there is more of an equal distribution between IP and IT. Nevertheless, you always have the option to focus more on IP or more onto IT, depending on your interests.
- If you want to get into the IP & IT field, it is ideal, as you learn a bit of everything. As some similar programs in EU have either only IP or only IT, I find that the biggest advantage of this program is that you can get to know well both subjects (which are interconnected anyway) and later potentially choose the one you're more interested in.
- If you are new on the field, you will probably find that there are quite many options regarding the curriculum offered and while this might be challenging for a junior IP/IT lawyer, it can be very promising for laying the foundations for future work or research. Personally, the program helped me navigate through the available options for work on the field.
- But also for people already in the IP/IT industry, I feel that, because they would probably have an idea of where they want to focus and research on, the LIPIT program can be helpful for them to engage with specific topics, ideas and work interests.
- Lastly, It is a 1-year LL.M, therefore probably more intense as other (2-year) LL.Ms might be. The required for graduating courses and the assignments/essays/exams can be distributed in various dates between the two semesters, and not necessarily in structured exam periods at the end of each semester. From my experience, this can make the program challenging sometimes. But as we had the option to choose our courses, a good advice is to choose the ones you are more interested in and have a research or work interest for!

Best Wishes for Good Luck to future applicants.
