I just received an offer from Leiden for an LLM in European and International Human Rights Law and I would be grateful if someone could give me some insights as to the quality and characteristics of the course such as the size of the classes, the contact with individual professors (e.g. for references), the availability of internships or volunteering work during the masters, the availability and quality of teams for moot courts such as ELSA, and the possibility to pursue a PHD afterwards or getting employment in the human rights field.

I also hold an LLM offer from LSE which I am aware is generally higher ranked than Leiden, but I've gotten mixed reviews about in terms of the quality of teaching.

Groningen actually has the top programmes for international law, including human rights law, in the Netherlands currently (Keuzegids Higher Education Guide 2017 - they do rankings of all masters programmes in the Netherlands). And at the ELSA Human Rights Moot Court competition this year, our team placed 4th. Most of our IHRL graduates end up working in IGOs, NGOs, Government, and academia. Hey!

I'm currently a student in the LLM in European and International Human Rights Law. The size of the classes is ideal. We are a group of 18 and we take all the courses together. It is perfect that is so small because it is more personalized and you develop closer relationships with the professors. At the same time it is very diverse. We are 18 from 16 different nationalities so there is a lot of different input and opinions that make the classes really constructive. Professors are always open to meet and chat with you; they are very open for references as well.

Internships or volunteer work during the masters may be found, but I don't recommend it, since the program is very intense (it is an Advanced masters). I would recommend for you to start the program and then decide whether it is possible for you to do an internship at the same time. Finally, as for the PHD pursuit or getting employment, I understand most of the people from last year were able to find really good positions after finishing the program.
Right now most of us just started the process of applying to places and some already have found jobs in their home countries, but having the Advanced LLM in your CV definitely helps!!

I'm waiting a reply from the same program and my status just changed to "sent to faculty" today. Do you remember how long it took for the decision after that point?

I have accepted my offer and paid the Housing Fees, Visa Fees, etc. to Leiden too for the same course, i.e, European Law and International Human Rights Law. Hoping to meet all of you in Leiden. Cheers :)
