UK LLB + Canadian LLM = Job?

Zend Cama

Hello all,

I have recently graduated from Kent University with an LLB. I am hoping to ultimately work and settle in Canada. This doesn't have to be In practice, I am also looking for a graduate job within the banking or corporate sector. I was hoping to do my LLM in commercial law in Canada. Would it further help me secure a job or do employers normally overlook it/ just consider your undergraduate?

Any thoughts on a UK LLM within the Canadian Job market?

ANY advise would be helpful as I do not want to waste money on a qualification wouldn't place me in a better position than I am now in terms finding a good job.

Many thanks

An LLM won't score you any points with Canadian employers. Just focus on the NCA and finding articles if you want to find a job in Canada. The only (marginal) value that I can see in doing an LLM in Canada would be access to the careers office and networking. And I suppose it could help with 'rebranding' if you're looking to change focus

Hi. Sorry for delay but I just saw this. The LLM admissions criteria will vary by school but they all consider your law school grades, class ranking, work experience, statements, references, etc..I feel like I am repeating myself but an LLM will not help you find a law job in Canada. To practice law in Canada you need to be admitted by the law society of the province. To be admitted to the law society you must either (1) have a Canadian degree (LLB or JD) and complete articles, or (2) pass all of the NCA requirements for foreign grads and complete articles. An LLM will not make you eligible for articles. If you're looking at academic career, that's a bit different because you will want to get into an LLM program with a substantial research/writing component. Those programs place a heavy emphasis on your law school grades and prior written work. Good luck.
