Wharton Certificate v. NY Bar

dong

Luckily, I was admitted to Penn Law and am considering to apply for Wharton Law and Business Certificate.
It seems to be an attractive opportunity, but my first priority is to pass NY Bar exam.
So I would like to ask you if it is possible for me to attend business classes at night and even on Saturdays while preparing the bar exam at the same time. I think it depends on how intensive the LLM program at Penn Law is.

I have a friend who did the Wharton Program and he passed the NY Bar. According to him, the course requirement is not so heavy.

I did the NY bar while studing a post grad degree. the degree was full time 9-5 with exams regularly etc, i did the NY bar classes on fri night and saturday.

It's possible if you work at it. I did my NY stuff on my post grad lunches etc even if we got only half hour break i would be doing bar work thats just what you'll have to do but if you can stay committed then its possible and by all accounts worth it

I got a problem.. to decide a law school among

columbia,NYU and Uepnn+ wharton certificate...

I believe that in Upenn with 70,000$ i will get LLM + wharton certificate, in corporate law track

But in Columbia and NYU ( with 70,000$+) for LLM, (the course fee and living cost ) is equal to what i will invest in Upenn with Wharton certificate..

Jobs are rare in US so i believe that i will have to go back to Asia, in such case wharton ( certificate ) will somehow give me an edge to get a good job in my country..

I believe that though the CLS and NYU are great law schools in corporate law but Upenn with wharton ( equal to the cost for living in NY for CLS,NYU LLM ) will open the more doors in Asia...

What do you consider in such a situation as in NYU, CLS or Upenn with Wharton certificate in Business and law..

because rankings are

1)CLS,
2)NYU
3)Upenn

but with Upenn+ wharton certificate i think with due consideration of our investment, Upenn will be the best option with Wharton course with respect of UK and Asian job market..

What will be your choice in this case..

The decision in your case should be between Columbia and UPenn.

I don't know what I would decide, but I think I would go for the brand name Columbia, as it is a lot more known by people in general. And because of NY.

UPenn+Warton is a very good choice also.

@ Alawyer,
Congrats!
You have made it to some some very fine and reputed schools.
Columbia is much more well known amongst all your other choices and New York is the heaven of legal practice in the US which gives you a huge advantage in the sense that most law firms in New York prefer hiring from NY itself. Columbia is amongst the highest rated brands and very well known all across the world and supposed to have a fantastic Corporate law program rated much higher than that of UPenn.
UPenn corporate law program with Wharton certificate would still fall short of the reputation of Columbia's as a brand as well its corporate law program.
You should probably check Brain Leiter's Top 15 Schools From Which the Most "Prestigious" Law Firms Hire New Lawyers at this URL
http://www.leiterrankings.com/jobs/2008job_biglaw.shtml
You will discover that maximum number of job placement takes place from none other that Columbia Law School which is even ahead of Harvard.
You should further check out Top Ten Law Faculties in Scholarly Impact and you will find the discover the names of some of its leading faculty amongst which three are top notch professors in Corporate law.
The url for scholarly impact is as follows:

Furthermore you should check out Most Cited Law Professors by Specialty in Corporate at this URL
http://www.leiterrankings.com/faculty/2007faculty_impact_areas.shtml#BusinessLaw
Here you will discover that most cited and best known faculty in Corporate law come from Columbia.
There are several other rankings and information available at leiterranking.com which will help ease off your confusion.
I don't know about the importance of Wharton certificate but the common understanding is that certificates are not given so much weight and compared to Columbia Law School's program, in my opinion it certainly raises no eyebrows.
If I were you I would forget about any other school and run for Columbia.
Rest choosing a law school is a matter of personal choice and I hope you make the best of this opportunity.

Another thing I forgot to add here that I am from Asia and trust me most firms would easily recognize Columbia rather than UPenn.
One of my friend is an alumnus of UPenn and sometimes cribs that despite being a top notch university most people fail to recognize the same, however Columbia as a name speaks for itself and sells better than UPenn though it may not necessarily be the case in another region.

@Alawyer,
You are right when you say that these rankings exclude LLMs' and other degrees. All rankings, all information available in the general public domain about US law schools or other programs pertain to JDs' only. Data for LL.M. programs is usually not compiled and more or less is unavailable. I think most of us refer to the same material available for JDs' to evaluate the merit of their programs as well as the scope of employment.
As a matter of fact, last year 4 people known to me have been to US and one of them went to Harvard, one to NYU, another to CLS and the last of them all went to Georgetown.
The guy from Harvard came back home very recently, so are the guy and girl at CLS and NYU planning to return home, whereas luckily the guy at GULC was very fortunate to have found a job. When I spoke to him about how he managed to find a Job, he simply stated that most of his batch mates have returned home and some are still searching for a Job in a wild hope, however he was just plain lucky and somehow managed to be at the right place at the right time. He told me that it is not a large firm but he was still quite happy about it. He said that the market is getting worse day by and day and If I am planning to come, then the last thing I should expect is a job here in US.
None the less, I think you should research a little more on the Wharton certificate and its merits as against an LL.M. from Columbia and even with Wharton certificate in US or otherwise, it won't match the appeal of Columbia Law school. Even if you are considering a job back home, I personally feel CLS would add more prestige. The cost factor is relatively the same but the advantage of being in NY and at Columbia seems as a better choice. If you think that you can wait for another year and would like to defer the LL.M., that would be even better, but personally I was too tired of slogging my ass in the office day and night for the last 4 years with little mental peace and going for an LL.M. has become necessary for me.
All the best in whatever you do my friend!!
