LL.M and New York Bar exam

Dolega

Hi all - I am currently taking my LL.M in order to 'cure' my foreign legal qualifications to be able to take the New York bar exam, post LL.M completion. Does anyone know whether I could sit the bar exam in July 2014, bearing in mind that I will have only just completed my LL.M at that time? It seems like a tight time frame.
Thanks.

Hi! You should be able to sit for the upcoming July 2014 New York Bar Examination. You should get your papers in for the eligibility process asap. Make sure you will ask your school to indicate the courses that you have to take to be able to qualify. Take a look at the Bar Examination website at:

Thanks

Thanks Manuel. I appreciate your help. I had submitted all my foreign paperwork to the NY committee previously which then led to them telling me that I needed to take the LL.M. Do you know whether I would just need to submit the LL.M completion certificate direct from the law school at the time of completion, or submit the certificate (pending successful completion)? Thx for any guidance you can give.

I assume that you have been deemed ineligible because you need an LL.M to cure the deficiency. If this is the case ask your school at the end of the LL.M. to send the transcript directly to the Bar Examiners. They do it all the time for JD students. Also remember to register for the exam during the proper window. You should be all set after that. One more thing, Just make sure you take the mandatory classes, your school should be ready to assist you. Where are you doing your LLM?

Manuel

Thanks Manuel. I think I am on the right road with the classes and paperwork. I am at Albany law school. Have you been through the same process?
