How can foreign lawyer take the New York Sate Bar

lucky_

Good afternoon.

I would really be very grateful if someone could help me.

Three years ago I finished university in Moscow (Russia) and obtained diploma of lawyer. All these years I worked as a lawyer in Russia. At present time I plan to gain admission to the NY Bar. 520.6 of the Rules of the Court of Appeals establishes requirements for eligibility to take the bar examination. If I correctly understood the main step in order to qualify to sit for the bar examination is taking 20-credit program of study at a U.S. law school. Must this 20-credit program be as an LL.M? Or are there any programs of study in order to obtain 20-credit program? What law schools provide these 20-credit program of study in order to pass Bar examination? How long does it take to study?

Thank you in advance

As you are from a civil law country, I am of the opinion you need to have LL.M. from U.S, to qualify to take the NY Bar exam. LL.M., is a 1year program.

With a Qualifying Law Degree from a common law jurisdiction with number of years practice; I presume you are eligible to sit for the exam. But in the meantime, please contact the Board of Law examiners with your transcripts for official verification and confirmation.

Good luck!
