Hi

Like New York Bar Exam or California Bar Exam etc in USA or QLTT(UK), is there a similar exam in Australia that entitles a foreign Lawyer (from an 'English Common law Country') to pass the examination and enrol in any Law Society of Australia ?

Hi Craig,

As far as I am aware, there is no such exam. Firstly, australian trained lawyers are automatically entitled to practise law without the need to undertake a bar exam. Secondly, in my law school studies I have met several foreign qualified (e.g. japan, UK, Russia etc) lawyers undertaking selected courses together.

In brief, depending on your legal qualifications, you will have to undertake selected courses within the Australian LLB/JD and practical legal training (some states do provide exemption). I might be able to help you out a little more if you let me know which jurisdiction your law degree is from :)

Hi Sharika,

LLM programs in Australia are not as competitive as that in US and they generally only require applicants to have a pass degree (i.e. 50% and above). This is, however, subject to candidates meeting the english language requirements stipulated by the university.

Uni of melbourne might require candidates to have better undergraduate degrees but I am unsure. I have heard from friends that they might require students to complete their 1 year LLM into 1.5 years.

Hope this helps.
