LLM in Australia

aisha1

I am planning to apply for an LLM in International Law in University of Sydney.

I want to ask a couple of questions:

1) During LLM can I take up a part time job to support myself a bit.

2) I am not interested in practicing law. I want to go for PhD after LLM preferably in Australia. Is it easy to secure a place in the doctoral program over there?

I'd appreciate your views and suggestions.

PS: Finally figured out how to post a new thread! :-)

Hi

I've applied to transfer into law from another discipline. Just wondered if anyone knows how many students UNSW and US took in 09? I'd like to know my chances of getting in. :) I have a D GPA, but I'm worried its not enough...does anyone know anything about my chances?

Hi Aisha -

I too have applied for a Master of Criminology at University of Sydney - and a UNSW LLM in Intellectual Property Law.

I was also looking at supporting my studies by working part-time.

I guess it will all depend on the subjects you take at law school - because some are 1 week long intensive courses and some go throughout the year/semester.
So (and this is all just my thought process) - I am guessing it would be OK to work while studying IF your employer is understanding about your study requirements and the fact that you maybe missing for the relevant chunks of the semester duration...

Also - you'd want to think about whether you want to work in the legal sector or just any part-time job in any sector. As far as legal jobs go - I guess a paralegal/law junior type job will suit better. Also it is important whether or not you have an Australian work-permit. If so then it will make things much much easier.

Hm. Regarding going for a PhD, I would imagine each university would have a cut-off mark for what you achieved in your LLM as a selection criteria. Also would depend on your thesis topic. I too have not ruled out the option of pursuing the PhD after completing my LLM - but something that I am not worried about at this stage.

It would be good to rack up as much research-thesis writing type experience - so it would help to select a couple of opinion-only based papers or find out how the Law Review of the University operates and whether you can help them in any way.

Hope that helps - I'm in a similar boat as you too. Have you received a reply from USyd yet? I am probably going to chose UNSW because LLM IP is not offered in USyd and that is the course I am leaning toward.
