Hello fellas, I was researching LLM online and what a great find this site is!
I am a newly admitted solicitor in New South Wales holding an LLB and a GradDipLegPrac. I am looking to do LLM full-time. From my understanding, there are two types of LLM offered at USYD - Coursework and Research. I do not qualify for Research because I am just short of an LLB (Honours).
(1) Is there a similar requirement for entry into Coursework?
The Coursework is to cost slightly over AU$20k (please correct me if I am wrong).
(2) Is FEE-HELP going to cover everything? I only recently attained permanent residency, so I am unsure about these benefits. If someone could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it! :)
(3) Upon completion of an LLM, I am of the understanding that I would then qualify to do PhD. Is it true that any permanent resident doing PhD would be exempt from payment?
Any help would be great!
Thanks in advance. :)
Cheers,
Charles

MOST UNIVERSITIES GENERALLY ONLY REQUIRE A PASS LLB DEGREE FOR ENTRY INTO THEIR LLM DEGREE. HOWEVER, UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE (AND PERHAPS UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY) IMPOSES A HIGHER REQUIREMENT - I.E. 2ND UPPER CLASS AND ABOVE IF I AM NOT WRONG. PLEASE DOUBLE-CHECK THIS.
YES, YOU ARE RIGHT - THE COST OF AN LLM IN A Go8 UNIVERSITY IS GENERALLY AROUND THAT REGION.
(2) Is FEE-HELP going to cover everything? I only recently attained permanent residency, so I am unsure about these benefits. If someone could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it! :)
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR PR! IF I AM NOT WRONG, FEE-HELP IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO CITIZENS. YOU WILL PAY DOMESTIC STUDENT RATES WITH YOUR PR BUT THIS WILL HAVE TO BE DONE VIA CASH / SCHOLARSHIPS (RATHER THAN FEE-HELP). PLEASE DOUBLE-CHECK THIS - I HAVE JUST READ THROUGH THE FEE-HELP WEBSITE AND IT APPEARS MY UNDERSTANDING IS CORRECT.
(3) Upon completion of an LLM, I am of the understanding that I would then qualify to do PhD. Is it true that any permanent resident doing PhD would be exempt from payment?
IT WOULD REALLY DEPEND ON THE RESEARCH COMPONENT IN YOUR COURSEWORK DEGREE. SOME UNIVERSITIES WILL ACCEPT YOUR LLM (COURSEWORK) FOR THE BASIS OF ENTRY INTO THEIR PHD PROGRAM IF THERE IS A RESEARCH THESIS COMPONENT. THE RESEARCH THESIS SHOULD BE MAJOR AND CONSIST OF 2 OUT OF 8 UNITS WITHIN IN THE LLM OR PREFERABLY 4 OUT OF THE 8 LLM UNITS YOU ARE GOING TO COMPLETE. YOU WILL NEED TO CHECK THROUGH INDIVIDUAL UNIVERSITIES' WEBSITE TO DETERMINE THIS. THERE ARE DIFFERENT POLICIES IN PLACE TO DETERMINE "HONOURS" EQUIVALENT VIA A MASTERS' DEGREE. SOME REQUIRE A MASTER TO HAVE A 66% RESEARCH COMPONENT WHILST SOME ONLY REQUIRE 33%. ALSO SOME MIGHT PERHAP YOU TO DEMONSTRATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCE/EXPERTISE FOR ENTRY INTO THEIR PHD PROGRAM THROUGH PUBLICATION.
BUT YES, PHD STUDENTS ON A PR VISA WOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE RTS SCHEME AND IS EXEMPT FROM FEE PAYMENT.
Any help would be great!
Thanks in advance. :)
