Degree Conversions?

If I've recieved my LLM from a University outside of North America (South Africa) but am now wanting to move to Canada, do I need to convert it or take an extra year or how does it work?

It all depends upon the purpose for which you are seeking to use your LLM. The LLM degree does NOT entitle you to practice law in Canada [for details on this see website http://www.flsc.ca/en/foreignLawyers/foreignLawyers.asp ] as you will need a LLB [or LLL in Quebec] but you may qualify for advanced standing for the LLB.

If you plan to use it for teaching opportunities, then the fact that it is a foreign degree is not a problem per se but the quality of the school, your performance in the program, how recent the degree is, etc all are factors. For other work opportunities, the LLM is valuable as demonstrating your skills.

Hope this was helpful.

Dear Mr Morse,
Thanks for your exposition above.
Please, how easy (or difficult) is it for a UK LLM graduate (with distinction) to get a teaching position in a Uni in Canada?
