Hi! I'm doing an LLB in Scots law and am hoping to convert to South African law. Does anyone know whether an LLM in South Africa would be enough for one to qualify for work as an attorney in South Africa? I have read that you need to have an LLB from a South African University plus citizenship or permanent residence to qualify for work as an attorney but I am not sure if my understanding of the law is correct.
If anyone could help I would appreciate it greatly!!!

Your LLB should be sufficient, you would not need an LLM to become an attorney.
However, you will have to complete a "Practical Legal Training" Programme and write four board exams, as well as serve articles, usually for two years. Your articles would have to be registered with the law society for that province. After that, you can apply to the High Court to be admitted as an attorney.

I suggest you contact the Law Society for any additional requirements that might apply. You could try the Law Society of hte Northern Provinces 012 338 5800 / http://www.northernlaw.co.za/.
