The Program

Arizona Law offers several programs for those seeking an advanced law degree.

2-year JD for Non-US Lawyers
Arizona Law is one of the few American law schools to provide those with non-U.S. legal training the opportunity to earn a JD (Juris Doctor) in only two years.

JD students in the advanced placement program receive the same JD degree as the students in the traditional three-year JD program, but in less time and at a reduced tuition. A JD offers many advantages over an LLM, including access to the bar exam in all 50 U.S. states, a far better understanding of American legal principles and processes, more extensive legal research and writing training than is possible in the typical one-year LLM program, providing you with superior knowledge of legal English writing and research techniques, and enhanced employment opportunities.

LLM: International Trade & Business Law Policy
The Master of Laws in International Trade & Business Law (ITBL LLM) offered by University of Arizona Law, in cooperation with the National Law Center for Inter-American Free Trade, is a one-year, full-time course of study designed primarily for lawyers trained outside the U.S. that provides you with the theoretical and practical knowledge required to understand current developments in the areas of international trade and commercial law.

ITBL LLM candidates at University of Arizona Law complete a minimum of 26 credit hours for the degree. Foreign students also complete a two-unit Introduction to American Law and a special course devoted to U.S. research and writing techniques. Most of the curriculum consists of "core" courses in International Trade and Business Law, International Commercial Law, and instruction in related areas such as Investment Law, European Union Law, Commercial (UCC) Law, Corporate Law, Administrative Law, Antitrust Law, Securities Law, and/or Domestic and International Environmental Law.

Alumni and current ITBL LLM students represent a diverse group of cultures and languages, including more than 40 countries and 15 languages.

LLM: Indigenous Peoples Law & Policy Program LLM
The Master of Laws in Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy (IPLP LLM) is an intensive one-year course specializing in Indian and Indigenous peoples law. This LLM program provides both academic and practical training in all three areas of the field--international law relating to Indigenous peoples, Federal Indian Law, and Tribal Law. You may choose to pursue a general course of study or one of three concentrations: Critical Race Theory/Practice, Cultural Resources, or Human Rights. IPLP LLM candidates complete 24 credit hours of course work (two semesters, full time).

LLM: General Studies
The Master of Laws in General Studies (General LLM) offered by University of Arizona Law is a one-year, full-time course of study. It is distinctive in its flexibility and breadth of offerings. Students design their own curriculum in keeping with their specific goals and interests, choosing from University of Arizona Law's extensive course offering.

Please contact us at path@law.arizona.edu if we can help you determine which degree program is best for you.

The University

The University of Arizona (UA) is one of the premier public universities in the United States. With nearly 40,000 students and more than 200 academic programs, the University of Arizona is a premier, public research university. The National Science Foundation (NSF) ranks the UA 19th in research and development expenditures among public universities and colleges, and 30th among public and private universities and colleges in the U.S.

The NSF also ranks the UA No. 3 in physical sciences research. U.S. News & World Report ranks the UA among America's Best Colleges, and the Princeton Review lists the UA as one of "The Best Western Colleges." The UA ranks No. 50 in the world and No. 37 nationally according to the Center for University World Rankings. The UA is one of the nation's top producers of Fulbright Scholars.

The Law School

With a century behind us, the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law is known for intensive, individualized teaching, small class sizes, and a close-knit community of about 450 students. Approximately 30% of our students are from outside the U.S. This diversity provides you with opportunities to meet people from many cultures and gain a greater awareness of other legal systems, while building a network of contacts from around the world. You'll build enduring relationships with your classmates and our alumni, all in an environment that challenges you to extend your reach—even beyond your comfort zone—to follow your passion, and blaze your own trail.

At University of Arizona Law you'll learn from professors who literally "wrote the book" in their fields, and, because of a low student faculty ratio of 10:1, you'll have unparalleled opportunities to know your professors and work closely alongside them. Among the law faculty, 23 hold chairs or professorships, 14 have been elected to the prestigious American Law Institute, three have been named Regents' Professors, the most distinguished faculty level at the University of Arizona, and one has been nominated for the Nobel Prize. University of Arizona Law faculty have distinctive strengths in both U.S. and international business law, international trade, intellectual property, environmental law, and trial advocacy.

As a University of Arizona Law student, you'll receive a comprehensive and rigorous legal education at a very reasonable tuition rate, allowing you to complete your program with less debt and have more options when you graduate.

If you're looking for an unmatched individualized education at a first-tier American law school, and if you're looking for exceptional value in your legal education, you should choose University of Arizona Law.

The Faculty

Again and again, our students cite the accessibility of faculty as one of Arizona Law’s best features and their relationships with faculty as among their best experiences here.

Ultimately, law study teaches you not just the basics of law but to become a better thinker — to analyze and understand things in a way beyond many other people. It’s a skill that takes coaching to develop, which is why a law school’s faculty make all the difference in your education.

Our scholars are nationally known for their work. Many literally “wrote the book” in their fields, and their insights and research reach far beyond the classroom, ensuring your education stays current and relevant as you also master time-honored fundamentals.

Our faculty actively practice, shape and teach the law.

Entry Requirements

Candidates for the 2-year JD for Non-US Lawyers and LLM programs must possess, or be pursuing, an undergraduate or graduate law degree from an ABA-approved law school in the United States or a non-U.S. law school approved by the government or other accrediting authority in the nation in which it is located. However, candidates do not have to be a member of the bar in the nation in which they received or are pursuing a law degree in order to qualify.
