The Program

Due to the increasing importance of digitalization in almost every profession, new juridical problems have emerged which cannot be dealt with sufficiently by the basic juridical education. The master program Digitalization and Law aims at managing the growing amount of legal issues by enabling a detailed specialization on the basis of a basic juridical education. The LL.M. Digitalization and Law is an interdisciplinary program: it covers the field of ethics, technology and informatics.
The master program is aimed at all professionals working in the field of information technology and welcomes international students. The LL.M. also addresses graduates of non-law degree programs, provided that their studies included at least basic legal knowledge. In addition, the course is directed at lawyers who wish to obtain a certificate of specialization in IT Law (Fachanwalt IT-Recht, § 14k FAO).
After a successful completion of the program, the University of Würzburg awards graduates the academic degree of "Master of Laws" (LL.M.) and a certificate of specialization in IT Law (Fachanwalt IT-Recht, § 14k FAO).
The program always begins in the winter term. All courses are taught in English and will be held by renowned professors and specialized lawyers on site in the historic city of Würzburg.
A previous IT background is not required, the necessary technical knowledge will be imparted in the courses.

Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg is one of the oldest German universities. A total of 250 degree programs are offered and supervised by renowned professors. In the Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai-Ranking), the Julius-Maximilians University of Würzburg is ranked 228th worldwide and 11th in Germany. The University of Würzburg maintains numerous valuable contacts in other European and non-European countries.
The Law School

The old university is the heart of the law faculty. It was built in 1582. Law is one of the most popular courses of study at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg.
The Faculty of Law at the University of Würzburg offers an excellent education in European Law. For more than 20 years, the title "Europajurist/in (Universität Würzburg)" can be obtained at the University of Würzburg.
Entry Requirements
For the LL.M. Digitalization and Law:
1) Educational background
You have a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts or Science with at least 210 ECTS credits at the University of Würzburg, a First State Examination in Law or a degree in a comparable course of study at another domestic or foreign higher education institution (e.g. university, university of applied sciences or university of cooperative education) or an equal domestic or foreign qualification
or
You have a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts or Science with at least 180 ECTS credits at the University of Würzburg or at another domestic or foreign higher education institution or an equal domestic or foreign qualification and practical work competences of at least 30 ECTS credits, proven by qualified practical work experience of at least one year and accepted by the programs Audit Committee
If the degree is a non-law degree, you must prove competences in one or several of the following areas with at least 15 ECTS credits:
- Basic knowledge in the field of civil law
- Basic knowledge in the field of criminal law
- Basic knowledge in the field of public law
2) Practical work experience
You have qualified practical work experience for at least one year
3) English language requirements
You must prove your proficiency in English at least on level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Please submit the results of a qualified test, we accept for example:
- the certificate of a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 72 points in the Internet-based test
- the certificate of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum score of 5,5 points
- the certificate of Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) with a minimum score of 160 points
- Bachelor’s degree (taught in English)
An English language test is not necessary, if one of the following exceptions applies to you:
- You hold a passport from one of the following countries:
Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States of America
- You have studied and completed your entire Bachelor's or Master's program in English
4) German language requirements
You must prove sufficient German language skills (at least on level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) by the end of the second semester at the latest.
A German language test is not necessary, if one of the following exceptions applies to you:
- You hold a passport from one of the following countries:
Belgium, Germany, Italy (exclusively from the region South Tyrol - Autonomous Province of Bolzano), Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Austria or Switzerland
- You have studied and completed your entire Bachelor's or Master's program in German
Application Procedure
The application must include the following documents:
1) Completed application form
2) Bachelor’s or master’s diploma (certified copy and – if not issued in German or English – additionally officially certified translation)
3) Baccalaureate diploma (certified copy and – if not issued in German or English – additionally officially certified translation)
4) Certificate of qualified practical work experience for at least one year (certified copy and – if not issued in German or English – additionally officially certified translation)
5) English language test results (certified copy and – if not issued in German or English – additionally officially certified translation)
6) German language test results (certified copy and – if not issued in German or English – additionally officially certified translation) [may also be submitted until the end of the second semester]
7) CV covering everything up to the date of application
Application documents must be submitted online from 2024. Further information can be found on the website of the degree program.
Tuition and Fees
For the LL.M. Digitalization and Law:
The tuition fees are 2500 euros each term. In addition, you will have to pay a semester fee to Würzburg University which currently amounts to 146 euros each term. With the payment of the semester fee, you will receive a student ID. The student ID enables you to fully access the university library and use the public transport in Würzburg for free.

The charming city of Würzburg is located in picturesque Franconia, surrounded by vineyards, the river Main and the Fortress Marienberg as well as being home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Residence with Court Garden.
Programs at University of Würzburg
Full-Time
- The program costs about 100 € per semester (including a ticket for local public traffic system).
- The LL.M. is a full-time program (3 semesters), but can be studied alongside a full-time job position. Lectures are held during the week after 6 pm or on Saturdays.
