Urgent : columbia vs NYU

rey

Hi everybody,

I know that the question Columbia vs NYU has been extensively discussed on this forum but I still have a hot question.

I have been admitted to both and I really need to make my choice asap.

Knowing that my field of interest is IP law, which one would you recommend ?

Hi Rey,
Both Law Schools have an excellent academic program in this field.

As you correctly stated, Jane Ginsburg is in Cambridge this year. If I were you, I would ask whether she will teach next year; if she does, I would probably choose Columbia. There is also a very interesting guy I once had the opportunity to meet: Eben Moglen. I fully disagree with him about lots of things, but he's a very imaginative and amazing guy as regards Internet and society (some kind of Lawrence Lessig without the pubications, but surely as smart).

In NYU, you also have very great persons. Thomas Dreier is a famous German Scholar who teaches International Intellectual Property there; he's smart, quick and thinks extremely fast and well. Rochelle Dreyfuss is also very good. She's currently working on a project from the ALI (American Law Institute) wich Jane Ginsburg and my Professor regarding the issue of international private law in Intellectual Property on Internet.

In any case, you can't make a bad choice. If Jane Ginsburg was there, I would go to Columbia, but it also depends upon the courses you would like to attend. Maybe one program will seem more interesting to you than the other one.

Of course, if you get admitted to Stanford or Berkeley, then rather go to either of those. None of these schools seem to have given all their decisions as regards the LLM Programs.

@Bistou,

Thanks for your input...
Would you really consider choosing Berkeley instead of NUY or Columbia.
I heard (and it is worth what it is) that Berkeley was going down...

Rey, like the NYU acceptance letter says, you're not going to make a mistake choosing any out of HLS, Yale, NYU, Columbia, Oxford or Cambridge. Go with your instinct.

Well as far as I'm concerned, I would still go to Berkeley yes. It's true that they have lost a lot of credit after the departure of Lemley for Stanford (that's why the ranking provided by USNews, which is not updated, cannot be relied upon in my opinion).

However, Berkeley still has Menell and Samuelson, two great fellows in this field. Besides, their curriculum in IP field and seminars are still excellent in my opinion. This is also the opinion of a friend of mine who graduated from Stanford. Berkeley lost power towards Stanford, probably true, but not towards others.

But once again, Columbia and NYU are also top schools in this field.

In the end, your heart will also guide you. Would you prefer to be on the East Coast in NY and closer to Europe, or would you prefer to be on the West Coast and its sun but farther from your home. Berkeley's Campus is very nice. This is also something which can matter...in the end, we'll be there for one year and won't do it again in our thirties...

I hope this helps you a bit.

Rey, for what it's worth, I'm leaning increasingly towards NYU. However, I think that if I was planning on staying in the US after graduation I might lean more towards Columbia. Outside the US, I think the reputations are more evenly matched and people see them as sub-Harvard and Yale.

In the US, however, I think Columbia is rated more highly for legal education.

anyone knows any thing on this topic in Corporate Law area? any comment will be appreciated. struggling on making decision, too...

Joseph, why you think Columbia has some edge over NYU when talking about remaining in the US after the study?

Hey Maggie I am facing the same problem, I want to specialise in corporate laws and I have offers both from NYU and Columbia...

I am trying to talk to a few alumni from both schools to get more input.

The two universities,as any two universities, have different standards. This means it is very probable that you are admitted in NYU and not in Columbia.I actually know a couple of people who were admitted in NYU and not Columbia.
I have applied to both, and Columbia has not answered(yet!), therefore it is highly probable that it might reject me,but NYU has accepted me.You should not compare the two, just keep your fingers crossed and wait!
