Unaccredited LLM Programs

Hi,

I have my JD, have been practicing for 4 yrs primarily real estate and some M&A tax work. Thinking about getting some specialize training. Many people have referred me to the Washington School of Law, In Utah, for its LLM in Taxation, this is not ABA accredited, but has other national accreditation, this program in like 4K total, any thoughts

Thank you

Are you looking to get an LLM to get a new job or to just gain knowledge. If you are looking to move to a new job, I would seriously consider whether getting your LLM from an unaccredited program is a smart move. Sure 4k for the degree is pretty cheap, but as they say you are probably getting what you pay for. Then again if you are just looking to gain more knowledge and you have heard decent things about the program then go for it but dont expect it to have a large impact on your job prospects.

Hey Setho

Thanks for the info. Yeah, kind of looking for both. I guess I feel like I spent so much $ on JD, MA, BA, Im like whoa a deal at 4K. The syllabus virtually mirrors many of the other accredited programs. I am just wondering about job prospects not that I necessarily need a new job, just would hate to get cut out for non-accredited LLM

Thanks

When it comes to job prospects from an LLM program, I think the prestige of the program and its location are what matters most. If you look at the syllabuses of almost any tax LLM program you will find that they are are pretty similar. I am far from an expert but I have a sneaking suspicion that getting an LLM from this program will probably open very few if any doors to new jobs. As has been said many time on this board. NYU, GT, and FL are the top 3 places to get a tax LLM and aside from these schools, the nationwide job prospects for most other schools are pretty similar though on a local level other school have pretty good placement. However the school you mentioned is an unaccredited correspondence school which would most likely send up red flags to anyone doing hiring.

If you are truly looking to save money maybe you should look into whether your employer is willing to foot the bill or part of it for the LLM. Or possibly look into UF, as a state school their tuition is less expensive and they are able to offer instate tuition to people from states other than florida. The cost of living there is also a lot less expensive.
