UK LLB, can i work in U.S.?

Hey,

I'm a final year undergraduate, studying LL.B. in a UK university. At the moment I am looking at my ll.m. options in different countries, U.S. being my prior choice.

1. The one thing I am really doubtful about is if I am eligible to be able to work in U.S.??

2. Can i straight to an ll.m. after graduation?

3. Don't most good universities need work experience before enrolling you in their LLm. Programme?

4. And once I am done with ll.m. then what, can i sit for the bar exams?? or am i eligible to sit for the bar exams straight after my ll.b. here in the UK?

graduation is coming closer, and i'm almost starting to lose sleep :)

I'm not sure about the answer to your question but each state has a website that posts the requirements to sit for its bar exam. Just google "New York bar exam" or "New York board of bar examiners."

A search along those lines should give you the info your looking for.

I think there are only three states that allow you to sit for the bar exam: NY, CA, and OH. Now, getting a job in the U.S. with an LLM is very hard because you are competing with JDs, but that does not mean you can't. Some of my classmates from Case Western who stayed in the U.S. are working there now. But there are no guarantees. If you are from the U.K., then you might have a better chance. I recommend applying to Case Western, in Ohio, because of affordability in living expenses as compared to NY or CA. Good luck!
