Straight from school?

Santa

Hey there,

Are there any other straight from school people here that are pursuing an LLM degree next year?

I've decided myself to do it right away, because I'm not yet psychologically fit to go to work for the rest of my life; see it as an expensive way to postpone real life.

But now I'm thinking that I'll probably be in class with people that are all at least 3 years older than me and with much greater experience in the law field. Maybe that's not that great...

Opinions? Maybe we can also post our age and work experience or something?

My opinion is that you are probably right about the experience of LL.M. students. However, that should not be an issue because you can learn from your fellow LL.M.-students and there are enough other LL.M.-students that have no work experience. Besides, most of the time you will be taking classes with JDs so its probably not a real big problem.

I am 25 years old, I have some experience as an European law teacher and I was an intern at the largest law firm in the BeNeLux.

I've heard a lot of critics saying that you must certainly not pursue the LLM degree straight from school, because of a lack of sufficient legal knowledge.

This is without any doubt a good argument, but on the other hand I think it is good to finish law studies (and thus pursue the LLM immediately) in one stroke to gain in maturity and international experience before going to work. This will certainly also boost your marketability.

Still not entirely sure I've made the right choice though :)

A view from the other side: I went to work after finishing my LL.B. and have spent a few years practicing litigation. I was thinking about going to do an LL.M. straight from my LL.B. (after a year of clerking) but needed to make some money and wasn't entirely sure what I wanted to pursue my LL.M. in. I went to work instead and didn't apply to LL.M. programs. This November, I finally felt "ready" to apply and applied to only a few places. I'm now considering whether I should leave my job to do an LL.M. and am wondering whether I'd be making the right choice. Should have done the LL.M. when I was younger and there was less opportunity-cost? Probably.

I think if it feels like the right time, it's the right time.

Thank you raji, that's exactly the reason why I'm doing it now - I'm sure I want to do it, but not sure whether it will be as easy later... (Although everyone always says it's better to do the LLM later)

As for the fact that most fellow students will be older and have more experience, I think it's a pro for me, not a con! And some unis have accepted me, so this means they don't mind either :-)

By the way Santa, I'm also from Belgium! (ULB) Where do you study?

I'm 22 (and will still be in September, so I'm ever younger than you :-p)

Where have you guys gotten into thus far?

I thought only certain schools accept people without work experience, whereas some other schools have strong preference for work experience.
