Very courageous individuals. One has to bear in mind, though, that applicants such as these are far and few between. I come from a Nordic country and I would imagine that none of my competitors (remember: regional diversity) has any comparable experiences. For those of us who live in peaceful societies, academic merit still seems to be the decisive factor.
